City Council Elections To Be Held On 9 September

Elections will be held for 13 seats on the city council on 9 September. The elections follow the quashing of the order giving Exeter unitary status which removed 12 councillors from office who had had their terms extended, and to also fill a casual vacancy for the Topsham Ward following former Councillor Starling's resignation from the Council yesterday for personal reasons.

The following 13 wards of the city will hold elections:-

*Alphington
*Cowick
*Duryard
*Exwick
*Heavitree
*Mincinglake
*Newtown
*Polsloe
*Pinhoe
*Priory
*St David’s
*Topsham
*Whipton Barton

There will be 41 Polling stations open between 7am and 10pm on Thursday 9 September. The deadline for those wanting to be on the electoral register in time to vote at these elections, and for those who may wish to vote by post is 5pm on Tuesday 24 August. John Street, the council's Deputy Returning Officer says: "It’s unusual to have elections in these circumstances and at this time of year when people are thinking more about holidays than who they should vote for. However, over 60,000 voters are registered to vote in the affected wards and are being asked to turn out to vote on who should be running the city.

"Although its only four months after the general election, voters circumstances may have changed in that time, and I want to ensure that everyone who wants to vote is given the opportunity to do so. Anyone who is unsure if they are on the electoral register, can easily check by ringing the elections office. If they are unable to get to a polling station on polling day, they can apply for a postal vote but their application must be received by no later than 5pm on Tuesday 24 August.”
